Arinto is a white grape varietal from Portugal. It is grown mainly in the regions such as Vinho Verde, Ribatejo, and around Libson on the central coast. The climate in this area is hot and humid, but Arinto does well with its naturally high acidity. Arinto's medium-sized bunches are very compact with small grapes. Arinto holds notes of citrus fruit, such as lemon and grapefruit. When allowed to age, Arinto can take on peach characteristics. In the region directly North of Libson, Arinto makes up most of the white blend wines. In Vinho Verde, the grape is called Perdena. Grapes grown here produce fresh and lively wine with good acidity and mineral characteristics. They also take on a bit of apple notes mixed in with lime and lemon. The acidity in Arinto makes it ideal as a blending component for other low acid white grapes, such as in sparkling wines, to improve structure. It is especially used for this blending aspect in Alentejo, Ribatejo, and Bucelas.
