Pinot gris, or pinot grigio, is a white wine grape variety that is similar to the variety, Pinot noir. The name for the variety means “grey” but the grapes can come in a black to brownish color. Wines produced from the Pinot gris variety are light in color, boasting of deep yellows, pale pinks, to bronze tones. The Pinot grigio from Italy is a twin of the Pinot gris variety. This variety was grown even during the Middle Ages in the region of Burgundy, and was thought to have been named Fromenteau. By the 1300s, the wine was introduced in Switzerland. Emperor Charles IV is said to have loved the wine so much that he requested cuttings of the wine to be brought to Hungary by monks. Pinot gris is one of the prominent grapes in Alsace and is grown in almost 20 percent of vineyards in the region. The vines grow well in cool regions and have high sugar levels even though it is ready to harvest earlier in the year. The variety is typically blended with Pinot noir and has a floral aroma. The Italian Pinot grigio gives light color wines that are high in acid with clean, crisp flavors.
