Viosinho is a Portugese premium white grape grown for wine making. It is typically grown in the Northeast part of the region. Usually found in mixed white vineyards, Viosinho has been grown in Douro and Tras-os-Montes since the 19th Century. Viosinho is not usually produced as a varietal wine, largely due to it being commonly planted in mixed rows alongside other white wine varieties, along with the fact that it produces extremely low yields. Viosinho is typically used in white ports and, increasingly, blended white wines. The variety makes full-bodied wine that adds structure and acidity to a blend along with floral and stonefruit flavors. Viosinho is often described as having flavors of apricots and peaches, but the idiosyncratic nature of Portuguese wine can make it difficult to isolate varietal flavors. Viosinho produces low yields and ripens early, producing small berry bunches that are very susceptible to rot. This makes it a challenging variety to grow and consequently it is only grown in small volumes. Viosinho grows exceptionally well in warmer climates that allow for an abundance of sunlight. This is one of the advantages of this grape, since warm climates have less of a chance to develop oidium and botrytis.
