McLaren Vale is an Australian wine region located just south of Adelaide. McLaren Vale is situated north west of the Fleurieu Peninsula and is considered the most significant region in Fleuieu. People have been cultivating grapevines in McLaren Vale since the 19th century and it is regarded as Australia’s oldest wine making region. Australian Thomas Hardy and John Reynella developed McLaren Vale by planting the first grapevines and now McLaren Vale is where many of Australia’s top producers are located. Uneven natural landscapes and being near Gulf Saint Vincent allows the growing conditions to change in McLaren Vale, with varying soil types. In addition, elevation differences are significant throughout McLaren Vale with both the Mount Lofty Ranges and Sellicks Ranges to the north and south, respectively. All in all, McLaren Vale is considered to be similar to the Mediterranean with cooling breezes and winds from the hills. This cooling effect will bring a natural acidity and structure to the grape. Crop diseases are uncommon in McLaren Vale due to the dry climate. McLaren Vale is known for red grape types such as Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Mouvedre. White grapes grown in McLaren Vale are typically Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
