Known for its bold and powerful red whites, the region is characterized by black slate and quartz soil, which make up the unique terroir. It is one of only two regions in the country that qualify as DOCa, giving it the highest qualification for wine making.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe monks were the first to plant grapes in the region in the 12\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e century after founding the Monastery of Scala Dei in 1194. The monks tended the grape vines until 1835 when the land was taken away and distributed among small shareholders.  Phylloxera devastated the vineyards at the end of the 19\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e century, and was not replanted until the 1950’s.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe vineyards are planted between 100 and 700 meters above sea level with a total of 19,783 hectares. The soil is volcanic in origin and comprises of black and red slate with tiny particles of mica, which helps to conserve and reflect the sunlight. There are several microclimates in the area and contrast between freezing winds in the north, and warm winds to the east. Summers are hot, long, and dry with temperatures averaging around 92°. Rainfall was well below the average levels of the previous years. This vintage can be characterised by a lack of rain, but most particularly by the successive heat waves which occurred from the month of May until the end of August. These heat waves caused the vines water stress as there was practically no rainfall from the middle of spring until the end of the summer. The effects of this were not apparent in the hotter zones and the vineyards with more sun exposure until the end of a spell of extreme temperatures in August.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e\r\n\t\u003cspan style=\"color:#000000;\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size:14px;\"\u003eThis was due to the fact that relative humidity was higher than normal and the windy periods tended to be less intense. It rained in March and April and after that, rainfall tended to be insignificant until the beginning of July when it did not rain at all until the end of September. In terms of average temperatures during 2012, they tended to be normal. Regarding the different grape varieties, it is worth pointing out that Garnatxa (Grenache) and Carinyena (Carignan) better withstood water stress, whilst recently introduced varieties tended to turn more readily to raisin. This ability to better withstand drought was more visible in the older vineyards. Over the spring and summer months, the scarce rainfall meant that grapes were very healthy and there were no problems with botrytis.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e\r\n\t\u003cspan style=\"color:#000000;\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size:14px;\"\u003eThe grapes ripened healthily in the lead up to harvest. Up until the end of August, we did not observe any water stress and berry development and ripening continued without problems. The vineyards are certified organic, and they've practiced biodynamics since 2004 but never got certification. The vinification is simple and the same as for Laurel: the bunches cooled down for 24 hours before being sorted and destemmed, then the grapes were put into the vat, where they warm up and start fermenting with the indigenous yeasts. It was pressed and put in barrels, 40% of them new, where it underwent malolactic and aged for 18 months. It feels like the most elegant and ethereal Erasmus ever despite the 15% alcohol on the label. It's very young and feels a bit shy, slightly developing notes of Mediterranean herbs, wild berries and flowers and is a little closed but very harmonious and insinuating. It's medium to full-bodied, with very fine and elegant but abundant tannins. It does feel lighter than previous vintages, possibly the effect of the cooler year. 3,400 bottles produced.
