Translated to English, Swart means, “Black.” After it rains in the cape in the winter, the Renoster Bos looks dark from a distance and was first called, “Het Zaarte Land,” by the town’s founder, Jan van Riebeeck. The darkness comes from the leaf-hairs that adhere to the leaves in the area when wet.

Wine has been produced in Swartland for centuries, but it was not until the 1980’s that the region began to grow in complexity and importance. The wide fertile plain in Swartland is literally the breadbasket of the region with wheat fields, citrus, vegetables, and vineyards reaching to the base of the mountains.

Viticulture is new in the area and is practiced under dry land conditions with very little irrigation. The under soil is gravel, which promotes good drainage and moisture retention. The Swartland Region has a Mediterranean climate and is ideally suited for the bush vine style of grapes with warm summers and cool winters. The cool southwesterly breezes from the Atlantic coast balance the climate perfectly. With so many microclimates in the region, growers are able to plant a wide variety of vines, producing excellent reds, whites, and roses.

Winter Sale Item

Kloof Street Swartland Rouge is made from 72% Syrah, 13% Mourvedre, 11% Cinsault and 4% Carignan.

Our Kloof Street range is all about fresness, balance and great drinkability.

Grapes were sourced from six vineyard parcels in different parts of the Swartland: One parcel of Mourvedre grown on the rolling, iron-rich soils west of Malmesbury; one parcel of Syrah and one parcel of Cinsault planted in the stony Shale and Schist based soils of Riebeek Kasteel Mountain; and one parcel of dry land, bushvine Syrah, one Carignan, and one Grenache all grown in the decomposed Granite of the Paardeberg mountain. The palate is fresh, lively and spicy with meaty berry fruits. Its quite rich yet fresh at the same time, with some lighter mineral notes in the mix. Lovely freshness, precision and perfume, with good acidity. - Jamie Goode's Wine Blog, 94100 The 2010 Granite Syrah is the debut release from a new vineyard so it is not extracted from the regular Syrah cuvee. It is 100% whole bunch fruit from Paardeberg fermented in open top barrels. It was just meant to be. Spearheading the Swartland revolution alongside Eben Sadie, Adi Badenhorst et al., their wines have raised the benchmark of what wine-lovers should expect from both Mullineux and Swartland itself. And that is not just good fortune, but rather hours and hours of hard work, with Chris out in the vineyards and Andrea in the winery. The fact that they still have to rent a winery in the town of Riebeek Kasteel makes it even more remarkable – this is no case of chucking wads of cash to ensure quality (which does not necessarily work anyway.) In essence, the challenges that they have faced seem to drive them forward, inevitably toward single vineyard bottlings that debuted with the 2010 Schist and Granite Syrahs, and hopefully toward their own winemaking facilities in the near future. Their Kloof Street white and red offer a wallet-friendly introduction to their wines, although I would not hesitate in spending a few more dollars on their White and Red Blend or if you can get your hands on one of the 99 cases produced, their Schist and Granite Syrahs. On this point, I asked Chris for some background on these wines “The winemaking is pretty similar, and for us the main difference is the soils, and specifically the moisture holding capacity of them. The schist soils are very rocky, shallow and steep, so any excess water tends to run off while the decomposed granite soils are much deeper, with a layer of clay about 2 meters below the surface that holds moisture. As a result the vines grown in the schist soils tend to struggle more and have more open canopies, smaller bunches and berries with thicker skins. The wines tend to be more dense and structured. Vines grown in Swartland’s decomposed granite have a slightly easier time as they have more moisture in the subsoil, so the canopies are larger with more shade and the bunches and berries are larger with thinner skins. The wines, therefore, tend to be more floral and perfumed (from the extra shade), and fresher.” I asked Chris whether there were any significant differences between the recent vintages. “There was not much to differentiate 2010 and 2011. Both were good vintages in the Swartland: relatively dry winters and cool summers without any major heat waves before we harvested. There were some heat waves after we harvested in 2011, and this compounded with the two preceding dry winters had more of an impact on vintages 2012 (very uneven ripeness) and 2013 (some vineyards with low acidities).” Mullineux epitomize elegant, terroir-driven, traditionally tailored wines that deliver nuanced scents and flavors while rarely treading over 13.5% alcohol. They do not shortchange wine-lovers on flavor, yet at the heart of their best blends there is an intellectual aspect that leaves you wanting more. It has a lovely iridescent amber hue. The nose is less flamboyant than recent vintages, more strict with clear honey, mandarin, quince and marmalade. The palate is unctuous on the entry with marmalade, honey, Clementine, hints of toffee and papaya. It is very well-balanced with the acidity to maintain freshness and poise. A small amount of sulphur (30ppm) is added to inhibit bacteria but allow the natural yeast to ferment. Fermentation takes roughly 6 months, and stops naturally when the yeast cannot ferment any further. Once fermentation is complete we treat the 6 barrels differently. Some barrels are not topped, but allowed to oxidize slowly, to build complexity. Some barrels are topped every few months, but left without sulphur, and the remaining barrels are dosed with sulphur and are topped every couple of months to maintain their purity and fruit. Ever since their Straw Wine was served blind against Château Yquem 1986, their portfolio of wines has gone from delivering Swartland at the highest level and with each passing season. While remaining relatively conservative to some of the region’s more “out there” exponents, they have become increasingly terroir-focused, as a cursory glance at their labels will demonstrate. At one end has been the storming success of the entry-level Kloof Street range, while at the top end the “Schist” and “Granite” labels are now joined by “Iron." Their ambitions meant that a change of backer was necessary and so Indian multimillionaire, Analjit Singh has stepped in. The company will be renamed "Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines" with Andrea and Chris retaining control. Vines are aged between 17 and 24 years. We lease each parcel on a long term basis, and have close and direct involvement in their viticultural management. Date(s) Harvested: Grapes were harvested between the 26th January and 5th February 2013 Yields: Between 4 to 6 tons/ha = 24 to 33 HL/ha. Winemaking: Hand picked grapes are cooled in our cold room, where after about 50% are crushed and destemmed to tank, and the remainder is added as whole bunches. 25ppm SO2 is added, and as with all our wines, no other additions are made. The must is initially pigeaged once a day. After about 4 days, fermentation begins with indigenous yeasts, and the wine is pigeaged once or twice a day, depending on extract and tannin development. Temperatures are not allowed to exceed 30 degrees centigrade. Fermentation lasts from 7 to 10 days, and after fermentation, two to four weeks (also depending on tannin development) skin contact is given. The wine is then drained and pressed to barrel for malolactic fermentation and maturation. The different parcels are racked in Spring to blend the wine, which is then returned to barrel and bottled unfiltered and unfined after 11 months in barrel.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0741/4677/5087/files/mullineuxsyrah_fe101b0f-6eca-4cf9-82b0-b02718c6d5ca.jpg?v=1771484481
keermont-white-blend-terrasse-2014
Keermont White Blend Terrasse 2014

65% Chenin Blanc, 13% Chardonnay, 17% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% Viognier

A polished light yellow gold color, this wine has a bouquet of citrus blossom with hazelnut, lemon grass and butterscotch undertones.
