Product Description

Overview

Winery: Cristom

Cristom Pinot Noir Louise Vineyard 2022 is made from 100% Pinot Noir.

Cristom Vineyards was founded in 1992 by the Gerrie family in the Eola-Amity Hills of Oregon's Willamette Valley, farming their east-facing volcanic hillside biodynamically and organically. Their single-vineyard Pinot Noirs, each named for a woman in the family, are Willamette benchmarks.

Louise Vineyard, planted by the Gerrie family in 1993, sits on the slopes immediately around the winery. It gives a woodsy, higher-toned expression of Eola-Amity Hills Pinot Noir — mossy earth, red fruit and Asian spice over a chiseled, age-worthy frame — from the balanced, classically cool 2022 season.

Review:
From a vineyard the Gerrie family planted in 1993 that sits around the winery, the 2022 Pinot Noir Louise Vineyard reveals a beautiful woodsy profile, with notes of mossy earth and higher-toned red fruit shining through, with cranberries, darker red fruits, and Asian spices. It has a chiseled structure, with fine compact tannins, a refreshing lift, and notes of tea leaf on its long finish. It's going to age with grace over the coming 20 years.

It’s going to age with grace over the coming 20 years.

Dark, broad and full, with ample black fruit, good structure and concentration. Brings warmth with its red cherry, dark plum and light smoke character. Moderate tannins, good acidity and nice breadth in the mouthfeel. Drink or hold.

Most diverse soils on the property the Louise is the only site without 100% volcanic soils. The warmest site on the property, protected from the Van Duzer winds from a horseshoe of forest is about radiance of warmth for winemaker Estrin. This site can get big fast, so he picks them a bit earlier than the others and has to pay attention to the extraction, exotic spice aromatics, Chinese five spice and Oolong tea. This is a bit more broad-shouldered and the tannins intimate that this will go the distance. The palate leans into savoury spice, with black tea, wild anise blackberries and mint. Brooding and elegant.

Classic to the core, the 2022 Pinot Noir Louise Vineyard seduces with a blend of violets, lavender and cola, giving way to crushed blackberries and a dusting of cinnamon. This impresses with its round textures and joyously ripe red and blue-toned fruits as a tactile staining of minerality provides a lovely grip toward the close. A cascade of rosy florals resonates over a bed of fine-grained tannins as the 2022 finishes long and beautifully balanced. The oak integration (33% new) is perfectly executed here.

Cristom Vineyards was established in 1992 by the Gerrie family to grow and craft distinguished wines of place that honor individual sites and traditional techniques. Family-owned for over thirty years, we remain stewards of our east-facing volcanic hillside in the Eola-Amity Hills focused on growing benchmark Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Bringing together biodynamic and organic farming methods, we farm the land with the next 100-years in mind. Our winegrowing centers on the philosophy that the greatest expression of terroir produces the finest wines. The cornerstone of our winemaking is rooted in traditional methods – site selection, low yields, whole-cluster fermentation and native yeasts – to produce balanced, dynamic wines of intensity, structure and length.

The Cristom logo was commissioned as a sort of ‘coat of arms’ for Paul Gerrie. It was created by the artist Timothy Tyler. The name Cristom honors the Gerrie’s two children, Christine and Tom. Hover over each element on the crest to learn about the specific elements.

We think in terms of centuries at Cristom and are led by a commitment of what this land and company will be one-hundred-years from now. The decisions we make on a daily basis are guided by the belief that we are working toward something bigger than ourselves and the value and outcome of our work is going to last beyond our own lifetimes. Cristom seeks to build an enduring brand known first for a special piece of winegrowing land that sustains far beyond a human working lifetime. Our wines are a product of a number of uniquely driven individual lifetimes and interpretations of land, craftsmanship governed by a handful of values and principles carefully nurtured over time.
