100% Konnowac Vineyard Malbec. Proving once again that malbec is a bold, big red. Cherry pit, leather and currants flow to desert florals- lavender and sage. Big tannins meet solid structural skeleton with a nose that jumps out at you to a full mid-palate to a long finish. On the second day, subtle notes of orange rind and musk rose arise. Drink now through 2019.
2012 is the vintage that will prove that when Nature is doing what she is called upon to do in these parts and the results are worthy of notice, recognition and dare I say fame. Rainfall held off just when we needed it to and for an extended period of time, allowing us to make exactly the pick decision that we wanted. This is the vintage that will prove that when Nature is doing what she is called upon to do in these parts and the results are worthy of notice, recognition and dare I say fame. As always, we used the D254 yeast, neutral French Vicard oak and punch downs instead of pumpovers. Drink the 2012s- any variety, any winemaker, thoughtfully. This is the year you may just become a Washington wine advocate.
Konnowac Vineyard has the second oldest planting of Malbec (1987) in Washington state. It sits at an 800 ft elevation on Warden Series silt loam with a slight slope aiding in both wind and frost protection. With an average of 8 inches of rainfall per year, this is a vineyard that can be hard during hard years but amazingly rewarding when attention is paid.
Steak, empanadas, rich meat sauce on homemade pasta.
