Overview

Winery: Long Shadows Vintners

Long Shadows Pirouette Meritage 2011  is madfe from 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 15% Petit Verdot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 4% Malbec

Vintage: The 2011 vintage produced wines that offer the best of both worlds: intense, vibrant and immediately enjoyable in their youth with firm structure and ripe tannins that make them excellent candidates for the cellar. Credit a cool spring, moderate summer and warm September. The temperate spring and summer conditions that defined most of the season developed fresh, intense black fruit character in the grapes. September's warm days allowed the grapes to reach physiological maturity and finish ripening perfectly. Cool fall evenings offset the warm days to preserve the grapes' acidity and ripe tannins, resulting in wines with great structure and backbone.
Tasting Notes: Opaque in color with intense aromas and flavors of ripe plum, black licorice and cedar that shine through from start to finish. Distinctive nuances of cassis, oak spice and mocha on the mid-palate carry the long, supple finish. A bold yet balanced wine with an impressive backbone providing both firm structure and richness.

Hand-sorted grapes underwent a variety of fermentation techniques to enhance each component of this graceful blend. Cabernet Sauvignon was fermented with native yeast in 400L oak barrels that were gently rolled to add to the wine’s structure and rich tannins without imparting bitterness. The remaining grapes were fermented in traditional stainless steel tanks, with select lots enjoying longer skin contact to enhance the wine’s dark color and mid-palate. Aged 22 months in French oak barrels, 75% new, before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Long Shadows Vintners

Founded by Washington wine pioneer Allen Shoup, Long Shadows Vintners is a collection of ultra-premium wineries comprised of internationally acclaimed winemakers from the major wine regions of the world. Each winemaker is a partner in a unique winery dedicated to producing a single Columbia Valley wine representing a 'best of type' that reflects the winemaker's signature style and the viticultural excellence of Washington State's Columbia Valley.

They construct wines in their own style, and with their own complexity, while striving to improve upon their singular benchmarks. Beginning with the 2003 crush, they are crafting signature wines that carry great promise for years to come.

They have devoted hundreds of hours sampling the many wines originating from the most important vineyards, and chose those particular vineyards that fit the desired style and type of wines each hopes to create. Grapes from every sub-appellation of the Columbia Valley were selected to take the fullest advantage of the region’s individual microclimates and terroirs.

"Long Shadows is the brainchild of Alan Shoup, longtime CEO of Chateau Ste-Michelle. It is a consortium of seven different labels, each with its own star winemaker who has a 25% share in the brand. The concept is that each “is dedicated to producing a single Columbia Valley wine representing a ‘best of type’ that reflects the winemaker’s signature style.” For the second straight year, every wine in this portfolio has achieved an outstanding rating. For this, the credit goes to Alan Shoup who put it all together."
