Overview

Winery: Pearmund Cellars

Pearmund Cellars Virginias Heritage is made from 44% Merlot, 25% Petit Verdot, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 9% Tannat

In recognition of the 400th anniversary of winegrowing in the Americas, Virginia's finest producers were asked to each donate a barrel of their best red Bordeaux-style varietal wine. These were then blended together and bottled to create a limited-edition commemorative wine called Virginia's Heritage.

A truly Virginia wine, Virginia's Heritage represents Virginia's burgeoning wine scene while at the same time paying homage to the quadricentennial establishing Virginia as the cradle of winemaking in the Americas.

The wine is lead with Merlot and Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon, Tannat then Cabernet Franc supporting the blend. The wine seems more of a Spanish Rioja Alta style than of Bordeaux blend as first expected. Dark fruit such as wild black cherry, spicy notes of cinnamon and vanilla and on the nose and mid-pallet. A pleasant earthy and smokiness with good texture, a long, refined finish with notes of sweet tobacco, cedar and spice, cherry liqueur aftertaste which will further develop over time in the bottle.

Limited edition, limited quantities.

16 independent Virginia wineries made their share, then wine was collected, blended and aged an additional year prior to bottling.

Review:

"A fun and delicious blend of petit verdot, merlot, cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon and tannat from 16 wineries across Virginia. The vintage is 2016, though the label doesn’t indicate that. Round and soft texture, yet it’s fresh and vivid. Full body. Lots of spicy, meat and plum character with some currants. Flavorful finish. Drink now."
- James Suckling (October 2018), 93 pts

"This nonvintage wine is a collaboration between 16 Virginia wineries. Dark plum aromas are dense on the nose and aided by black pepper and cocoa tones. It’s plush in feel, with black olive, tobacco and clove flavors. A warm finish with spicy oak and well-integrated tannins is smooth and attractive. —C.D."

The Pearmund Cellars Estate

Pearmund Cellars was founded in 1976 and purchased by Chris in 1993 (with his first vintage in 2002), the estate has had active agriculture since the mid-1700s.. It is located in the foothills of eastern Fauquier County, VA. The winery spreads over 7500-square-foot and they farm 25 acres of vines: Chardonnay, Viognier, Riesling, Late Harvest Vidal, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Ameritage.

At the estate the oldest Chardonnay vines in Virginia are planted, while the rest of the grapes are sourced from various parts of the Commonwealth. The vineyard is managed with as little intrusion as possible, and the estate operates in a largely holistic, earth-conscious manner. They produce about 7,000 cases annually with an almost equal split between red and white.

They produce 7,000 cases

Pearmund Cellars was voted Virginia's Favorite Winery in 2007.
