This is a highly-concentrated, dark cherry-red wine. A lively, delicate nose with liquorice and fresh fruit aromas of the Tempranillo variety, with spicy hints. It keeps the essential aromas of compote fruit. It is ample and fleshy and has elegance, complexity and power. On the palate, it shows soft tannins and liquorice, a velvety structure and a long, delicious and persistent finish.
Vineyards:
The grapes used to produce R&G Rioja grow in vineyards located in Rioja Alavesa, widely considered the premium area in the appellation Rioja DOCa. Out of the 540 hectares owned by Bodegas Labastida and a selection of plots in the highlands of Elvillar, we have selected some of the best vineyards and grapes that grow at an altitude between 450 and 700 meters above sea level.
The harvest:
Vine health was excellent in 2010. Despite an irregular winter and an unusually warm spring, the cool and dry conditions in September and October allowed for a good evolution of phenolic maturity that brought accumulation of colour and aromas in the skins. The year's excellent sanitary conditions allowed for wines to show an outstanding quality and the vintage has been rated "EXCELLENT" by Rioja DOCa.
Vinification:
The selection of grapes is done with the help of Vistalys, the latest optical selection table from Bucher Vaslin, which carries out a strict control so that only perfect berries go through. The stalks are removed from the grapes without squeezing them. Grapes are maintained in controlled conditions, with long macerations at low temperatures in oak casks with the cap submerged. The must is naturally pumped over using gravity in order to achieve the best extraction of polyphenols. The pressing is carried out using pneumatic presses and a vertical press, and the malolactic fermentation then takes place in brand new American oak casks. Cold-hot rooms are used at specific times to help the malolactic fermentation process and the stabilisation of the wine.

"This delivers density and balance, featuring a thick texture supported by fine tannins and fresh acidity. The plum, dried cherry, tobacco, sage and orange peel flavors are expressive and harmonious. The spicy finish lingers. Drink now through 2025. 150 cases imported. –TM"
