It was the spring of 1987, I was 17, and it was my first trip to California. Tim & I had just come from the Monterey Wine Festival & Master Sommelier program. We drove north from Monterey through San Francisco and across her famous bridge.
Another hour passes and finally we entered the new AVA (new at that time) of Russian River. The year 1983 marked the introduction of the Russian River AVA, which is now 10,000 acres in size and is known for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. At least 36 grape types are grown in this AVA, but Chardonnay and Pinot Noir make up 42% and 19% of the acreage respectively (7,100 acres).
Back to the story. Tim and I were to visit Joseph Swann and Sonoma-Cutrer. Sonoma-Cutrer had only been producing wine since 1981 and eventually put Russian River Chardonnay on the map with their three Chardonnay bottling: Russian River Ranches, Cutrer-Vineyard and Les Perrieres (the wineries Gran Cru wine). Sonoma-Cutrer's Russian River Chardonnay's, like Joe Swann's wines, display balance, harmonious flavors and good acidity. From that first visit I have always been a fan of Russian River Chardonnay's.
Taking advantage of the recession and a surplus of top quality bulk wine, I set out to the North Coast of California in March this year (2010). Fortunately, after 29 years of wine sales I have some very good contacts in both Windsor and Healdsburg, California. It's Sunday morning and I taste through various lots of wine, nothing is interesting until we reach Lot #9 which is a small lot (800 cases) of just about finished Russian River Chardonnay.--Fran Kysela
This wine has hints of tropical fruit, pear and New Town ripened apples. The wine is barrel fermented, but not overtly and is balanced just like a Joe Swann or Sonoma-Cutrer wine. This is Chardonnay for the lover of white burgundy-flavorful, balanced and delicious.
This is a great complement to seafood ranging from salmon to wild trout.
